How can I deploy ADFS and use MigrationWiz for migration?

Answer:

To understand this article, you should be familiar with ADFS, the Microsoft DirSync, and also our own BitTitan Sync tool.

Regarding DirSync and ADFS:

  • ADFS requires the Microsoft DirSync.
  • Once you enable ADFS, the web interface, PowerShell and all provisioning mechanisms do NOT work. Only the Microsoft DirSync can create objects.
  • The Microsoft DirSync will also prevent the creation of mailboxes at the Destination (so there are no mailboxes we can migrate data to).

If you want to use MigrationWiz to migrate, you need to make sure objects are NOT created via the Microsoft DirSync.

Fortunately, Microsoft DirSync is now able to perform a soft match between objects.

If you want to deploy ADFS early on (we do not recommend this):

  1. Make sure you have an Office 365 global admin account with a primary of onmicrosoft.com and a password.
  2. Create objects using MigrationWiz DirSync.
  3. Install Microsoft DirSync to match up objects and perform an ongoing sync.
  4. Install and activate ADFS.
  5. Migrate using MigrationWiz.

If you want to deploy ADFS at a later stage (we do recommend this):

  1. Make sure you have an Office 365 global admin account with a primary of onmicrosoft.com and a password.
  2. Create accounts at the Destination (you can use a CSV import file, or use the MigrationWiz DirSync).
  3. Migrate using MigrationWiz.
  4. Deploy the Microsoft DirSync to match up objects and perform an ongoing sync.
  5. Install and activate ADFS.
