End User Step-by-Step Computer Move Migration

This guide provides step-by-step instructions that can be used as a template to send to your end user. It outlines what to expect when using the mini agent to migrate their workstation computer from the source Active Directory domain to the destination Active Directory domain environment.

Important: To avoid authentication errors during the computer move process, make sure you have followed the below prerequisite in the source Active Directory environment as outlined in Active Directory Computer Objects Migration before attempting to migrate end-user computers.

  • Ensure that the MigrationWizComputerMoveAgentConfig .json file is present in the path “\\hostname.domain\MigrationWizComputerMoveAgentConfig". If the file is missing, navigate to the MigrationWizComputerMoveAgentConfig folder in the source Active Directory environment where the source server agent is installed. Right-click the folder, select Properties > Sharing > Advanced Sharing, enable Share this folder, then click Apply and OK.
By default, this is a hidden folder and you may need to enable the option to show hidden files to see this folder.

Make sure to inform your end users of the following:

  • Where to download or access the installation agent.
  • The correct username format required to join the target Active Directory domain listed in the Step 3 of this guide.

Important

Ensure that you have Administrator Access to your local machine in order to proceed with this guide.

Below is a video demonstrating the end-user experience of using the Mini Agent to migrate a workstation from the Source Active Directory domain to the Destination Active Directory domain environment.

This step will guide you to migrate your computer to the new Active Directory domain. Follow the instructions below to proceed:

  1. Enter your Source User Principal Name (UPN) in the blank space after you Launch the Agent and click Complete Setup (e.g., bob@sourcecompany.com). Make sure you have NO white spaces when you input the user UPN.

    • Minimize the Agent with the Minimize icon.png icon and wait for your Administrator instructions.
    • Close the MigrationWiz Agent with the Close icon.png icon.

      Important

We do not recommend using this option. Only select it if your administrator has specifically instructed you to do so. Please proceed with caution.

  3. After either waiting for the 60-minute timer to complete or manually starting the immediate domain join in the agent, a confirmation window will appear. Click Yes to allow your computer to join the new Active Directory domain. Your computer will then restart to complete the process.

If you select No, the timer will reset to 60 minutes, and you will need to restart the process from the Step 2 of this guide.
  4. The agent will now process your data and will let you know once your computer successfully joined the target domain. When the following screen appears, click OK.

After your computer restarts, it will be joined to the new domain, and you will see the usual login screen where you need to follow the step 3 of this guide.

Step 3: First Login into Target Domain

After the machine has been migrated, you will need to log in using your target User Principal Name (UPN). This step will guide you for your First Login to the new Active Directory Target domain.

Important

These steps are only required the first time you sign in to the new Active Directory domain. After your initial login, everything will function as usual.

Follow the instructions below to proceed:

  1. After your computer restarts, the login screen will appear Click on the Other User option to continue.
    1. Select Other User.png
  2. Fill your new domain Username and Password using the following format:
    • You can sign in using either your UPN (e.g., alias@domain.com) or the NETBIOS format (e.g., newdomain\username such as migrationfrog\isack). To type the “\” (backslash) symbol, press ALT + 92 on your keyboard.
