Why are my database files increasing in size?
Answer:
Refer to the appropriate version of your software below.
Exchange 2003:
Some customers migrating from Exchange 2003 have reported that their Exchange 2003 database files had increased in size. Note that MigrationWiz never alters Source data in any way. However, as data is retrieved, it is possible for Exchange to index, cache, log, or convert data in a way that increases storage. For example, Exchange 2003 may perform MIME content conversion, generate message tracking logs, or experience fragmentation. This could cause EDB files to increase in size.
If you see data inflation at the Source:
- Consider running eseutil.exe to defragment databases.
- Determine whether Message Tracking is enabled (see the example below - check to see if the log is rolling).
- Review the following Knowledge Base article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555360
Lotus Notes:
Some customers migrating from Lotus Notes have reported that their Notes database files had increased in size. Note that MigrationWiz never alters Source data in any way. However, as data is retrieved, it’s possible for Lotus Notes to index, cache, log, or convert data in a way that increases storage. For example, Lotus Notes may perform MIME content conversion, generate message tracking logs, or experience fragmentation. This could cause database files to increase in size.
If you see data inflation at the Source, check to see if the mailboxes affected are the ones being migrated. If necessary, allocate additional storage space and also consider only migrating a subset of the data (date filter, folder filter, etc.).
