MigrationWiz allows you to select the data region for the destination tenant while creating or editing your migration project for Google Workspace and Dropbox destination tenants. For Microsoft 365, MigrationWiz automatically detects the destination tenant's region.
Since this manual selection requires you to know the data region of your destination, it is important to read this article carefully while setting up your project. It will help you understand how to accurately choose the data region for your destination tenant in Google Workspace and Dropbox.
Important
Please note that once a migration is completed, you cannot change the region of the destination tenant.
Verifying the Region of your Destination Tenant
There are several ways to verify the region of your destination tenant. We recommend the following depending on your endpoint.
Google Workspace
For Google Workspace endpoints, you must verify the region of your destination tenant and its restrictions. To verify the region of the destination tenant follow the next steps:
- Go to Admin Console.
- Navigate to Data > Compliance > Data Regions.
Here you can verify if your data region is set to a specific location (Europe or the United States) or if it is globally distributed (No preference).
Important
Some services, such as Google Drive, Gmail, etc., are multi-regional by default. This means that they are not hosted in a single region unless you specify this in the Data Regions setting in Google Workspace.
Once these steps are completed, you must check the location restrictions to ensure compliance during region selection. To do so, follow the next steps:
-
Navigate to IAM & Admin > Organization Policies.
-
Look for policies like Location Restriction, which may define specific allowed regions.
Below you can find the example, which restricts new resources from being created outside of europe-west1
and europe-west2
:
constraints/gcp.resourceLocations:
allowedValues:
- europe-west1
- europe-west2
Dropbox
For Dropbox endpoints, you can find the region of your destination tenant directly in the Dopbox Admin Console by performing the next steps:
- Go to the Admin console in the left sidebar.
- Navigate to Settings > Team profile.
Here, you may see if your data residency is set to EU or under the global standard setting.
Important
For Business and Enterprise accounts, in the European Union (EU), Dropbox offers a data residency feature that can be enabled.
Available Regions
You can find the following available regions for the destination tenant in MigrationWiz.
- United States
- Netherlands
- Singapore
- Australia
- Japan
- Brazil
- Canada
- Ireland
- France
- South Africa
When you or MigrationWiz selects your region of destination tenant, please consider the information below:
As mentioned, Migrationwiz automatically selects the closest region to your destination tenant for Microsoft 365 endpoints. The table below outlines the expected available regions that MigrationWiz will display based on your Microsoft 365 data location.
Microsoft 365 | MigrationWiz |
Australia | Australia |
Asia/Pacific | Singapore |
Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) | France, Ireland, South Africa |
Japan | Japan |
North America, Worldwide | North America, Canada |
Warning
In the current automatic detection implementation, MigrationWiz only detects a continent-level location and assigns any of the available workers to that location.
For Google Workspace endpoints consider the following region mapping:
Google Workspace | MigrationWiz |
Europe | France, Ireland |
United States | United States, Canada, Australia |
No preference* |
Brazil, South Africa |
*No preference, follows the closest geographic location.
Important
MigrationWiz offers more regions than Google Workspace, so it will be okay if they select an option within the same continent. The options above are the suggested ones.Warning
Google Workspace does not support data center regions in Singapore or Asia, in these cases, you should select either the United States or the available European options.
